TDT 067
Onychomycosis (Nail fungal Infections)
TDT-067 is being developed for the topical treatment of onychomycosis.
TDT-067 uses Transfersome® Technology to deliver the leading drug for the oral treatment of local fungal infections directly to the infection site. Onychomycosis, a fungal infection of the nail bed, affects both finger and toe nails and, is widespread with prevalence estimated at up to 15% of the population with an increased incidence in the elderly with over 50% of those aged over 70.
Currently available topical treatments of onychomycosis are generally considered ineffective, as conventional topical delivery methods cannot deliver drugs through the nail bed and dead tissue surrounding the infection. Systemic antifungal drugs taken orally, which are more effective, are also expensive, require long treatment periods, and have the potential to cause serious side effects, especially at the high systemic doses required to achieve therapeutic concentrations of drug where it is needed.
TDT-067 aims to exploit the Transfersome® carriers' ability to transport the selected anti-mycotic drug deep through the nail bed and necrotic tissue to hit fungi at the source of infection, while avoiding the side effect issues associated with oral drugs.
Market
Onychomycosis is a wide-spread condition, and is even more prevalent in patients with certain pre-existing conditions such as diabetes. It is not a medically dangerous condition, but there is a clear desire for effective and safe treatment which also balances the relatively benign nature of the disease with the potential side-effects of the treatment.
